FROZEN SHOULDER
---- Dr.Sudha Prasad
Are you
between 40 and 60 years of age? Then you are more likely to have frozen
shoulder. When the shoulder hurts, people tend to restrict movements at the
joint. This immobility can worsen the problem.
Usual
presentation is pain in the shoulder, upper arm, difficulty in lying down on
the affected side thus interfering with sleep.
Progressive reduction in movement at the shoulder, disuse of the joint
and surrounding muscles result in stiffness.
Simple
everyday tasks like combing the hair, dressing up or reaching over head will become
extremely difficult. This condition is popularly called as frozen shoulder.
There
are different causes for shoulder pain, of which, osteoarthritis is commonest.
Here, the lubricant is reduced and the joint becomes stiff and painful.
Specific blood tests, supported by certain radiological tests are required
for diagnosis and treatment. Earlier the patient consults the pain specialist, better
will be the prognosis.
WHAT COULD BE THE REASON FOR SHOULDER PAIN IN THESE
PATIENTS?
Mr. Gopal, a throw ball player complains of pain
in the small hard lump felt on his right shoulder. It hurts him more while
reaching across the chest and especially on first awakening.
Manju is employed as a painter in house construction
work. He has shoulder pain which comes down to his upper arm. He also
complains of fatigue and stiffness. The
doctor finds out that there is no problem with his shoulder joint.
Pain
can also be due to prolonged lifting weights, repetitive tasks involving
movement at the shoulder and arm and fall
on the shoulder .
Thus, the joint itself or other
structures surrounding it or other structures surrounding it are responsible for pain.
Do not neglect pain
any where since it is a warning signal for you to get corrected.
